The Division of Critical Care is a provider of Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) training.
This two day course for medical doctors is an introductory course for beginners in ICU medicine, ideal for junior doctors working in or about to rotate through an ICU. This course equips them to assess and manage a patient who needs intensive care or organ support and covers issues from CPR to troubleshooting the ventilator.
The course is standardised and consists of a series of lectures in the morning and skill stations in the afternoon where the delegates are divided into small groups of 5 each. The delegates are required to complete a pre-course MCQ. After the two days a post course closed book test is taken and the candidates are required to achieve a 50% aggregate to successfully complete the course and receive a certificate.
BASIC is offered four times a year at Groote Schuur Hospital.
